No More St Simons Lighthouse?
The St Simons lighthouse is probably the most well known landmark of the area and it is temporarily being turned off for repairs and major restorations. The This is the first time it has been turned off since WW II.
The lighhouse is at the southern tip of the island near the village and pier and stands 104 feet tall. The lighthouse, built in 1872 is now maintained by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. On September 27th the lighthouse was turned off with much fanfare. Hundreds of people of all ages turned out for fun, food and music. The Mason Waters Band played, Hot 105.7 was recording remotely, Barbara Jeans served food and everyone enjoyed an evening of perfect weather to count down as the lighthouse went dark.
Probably the most recognizable landmark of the area, everyone will await the rotating light to return (I’m sure the captains of the cargo ships will also be excited to see it return). With this level of community involvement, this was just another reason why St Simons is such a popular place to live.
